How to read a PDF comfortably on a phone or e-reader: PDF to EPUB
Your files are never uploaded to a server. Everything runs on your device.
A PDF is a picture of a printed page. That is perfect for printing and awful on a five-inch screen, where you zoom, drag and lose your place. EPUB is the format most e-readers and reading apps use for books, and its text adapts to the screen.
Why PDFs are awkward on a phone
A PDF keeps a fixed page size. On a small screen you either read tiny text or zoom in and scroll sideways on every line. You cannot change the font size and you cannot switch to a night theme the way you can in a book app.
What EPUB does differently
EPUB is reflowable. Lines wrap to the width of your screen, you choose the font and size, and chapters appear in the table of contents. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, PocketBook and most reading apps open it. For Kindle, send the file with Amazon Send to Kindle.
Choose the right mode
PDF to EPUB converter has two modes. Text reads the words, joins broken lines into paragraphs, drops repeated page numbers and headers, and splits the book into chapters, using the PDF bookmarks when they exist. Page images keeps every page exactly as it looks, which suits scans, comics and layouts that would fall apart as text, but the pages do not reflow.
What converts well and what does not
Novels, articles and essays convert very well. Tables, multi-column magazines and pages with formulas do not reflow nicely, and pictures are not carried over in Text mode. If a PDF is a scan, it has no text to read. Use Page images, or recognize the text first with OCR: text from PDF and photo.
Going the other way
EPUB to PDF converter turns an EPUB into a PDF you can print or share. It lays out the text itself with a serif font, keeps headings, bold and italic, lists and images, and lets you pick the paper size and text size. Books protected by DRM cannot be converted, and scripts such as Chinese or Arabic are not supported.
Tips
- Check the title and author before converting. They end up in your library.
- Try a short excerpt first when the file is large, and then convert the whole book.
- Keep the original PDF. If something looks odd in the EPUB, you can try the other mode.
